Creating a Wise Economy

Speaking Gigs

One of my favorite parts of my job is trainings and presentations at conferences, seminars, Rotarian lunches, Little League games (wear a helmet!), etc.   I guess amateur theater kids never get it completely out of their blood.

So far the Spring 2011 Tour of Holiday Inn Products includes two stops (although more are probably coming):

  • I will be one of the featured speakers at the 2011 Michigan Small Town Conference, held April 18 -20 in lovely (and hopefully by then not snowy) Traverse City, Michigan.  I’ll be giving a keynote on Building a Wise Economy, followed by a breakout session.  The last time I was in Traverse, my 5-foot-tall 12-year-old was only evident due to my funny dresses and puffy ankles, so I am looking forward to it for many reasons.
  • I will be presenting a session on Public Participation that Does Your Project Good at the National Main Streets Conference, held May 22-25 in lovely (and definitely not snowy) Des Moines, Iowa.

During the last quarter of 2010 I got to roam all over the place

Michigan Downtown Conference, September 13-14, Bay City Michigan.  Topic was Sustainable Economic Development (with a downtown twist)

Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Planning Conference, September 29-30, Indianapolis, Indiana.   Spoke with Paul Culter of JACOBS and Peter Klear of the Campbell County (Kentucky) Planning Commission on When the Comprehensive Plan Comes Up Short.

International City/County Management Association Annual Conference, October 17-20, San Jose, California.  Spoke with Joe Coangelo of Middlebury, Vermont and Kim Walesh and Laura Prevetti of San Jose on Sustainable Economic Development

And here’s a selection of my recent presentations:

Sustainable Economic Development.  For American Planning Association, April 2010.

Public participation that does your project good.  For Ohio chapter of APA, also for National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2009.

Calculating the Community Costs of Demolition.  For Heritage Ohio, also for National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2008.

The OKI Fiscal Impact Model: Using Fiscal Impact Analysis for Sustainable Communities.  With Larisa Sims, AICP.  Indiana and Ohio APA, 2008 and 2009.

If you’re interested in a presentation for your organization, give me a call at 513-288-6613 or email della.rucker@wiseeconomy.com.

  1. Hi Della, I stumbled upon your site through the urban design podcast and really like what I see. You and I have a lot in common, I’m an economist by training and used to do a lot of economics development type work until I started my own company. If every unit I create creates one job in a community somewhere, so far I’ve created several thousand jobs. Have a look at my website: http://www.pedicab.com. There is a great story on my website that you might like about a guy in Akron who bought a pedicab after he lost his job as a trucker and became a minor celebrity. Please let me know what you think, I like what you said about sustainability and especially your blog about the lemonade stand.
